About the plant

Burr reed is a plant of pond margins and slow streams, standing in shallow water with stiff strap-shaped leaves and, in summer, flower heads arranged as separate balls up a zigzag stem — small male ones near the top, larger female ones below, which harden into spiky burr-like fruiting balls. The starchy corm at the base is dug in winter, peeled and dried. Note the naming point in the warnings.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Names overlap on this herb. The San Leng of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia is Sparganium stoloniferum; this listing names a different burr reed of the same genus. Check which one you are buying. Not for use in pregnancy — San Leng has a long record of use as a uterine stimulant — and it may add to the effect of anticoagulant medicines.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs.
